How to Change the Batteries in Wiser’s Smart Radiator Thermostat

Is your smart radiator thermostat trying to tell you something?

If your Wiser Radiator Thermostat has been flashing red or you’ve received a low battery alert in the Wiser Home app, it’s a sign the batteries need replacing to keep your heating system running smoothly.

The good news? Wiser radiator thermostat battery replacement is a quick, simple job you can do yourself - and this guide walks you through every step.

In this article with how-to video, we’ll cover how to spot the low-battery warning signs, which batteries Wiser’s smart radiator valves need, how to change them correctly, and what to do afterwards to ensure perfect performance.

How to Know When Your Wiser Radiator Thermostat Needs New Batteries

Your Wiser Radiator Thermostat gives you clear, easy‑to‑spot signals when its batteries are running low:

  • Solid red LED for 1 second once per hour → Battery low, replace soon.
  • Flashing red for 5 seconds every minute → Batteries critically low, replace immediately.
  • Low‑battery alert in the Wiser Home app → The app lets you check battery status anytime under Devices in the Settings menu.

These signals ensure you never have to guess - when you see them, it's time for fresh batteries.

Step‑by‑Step: How to Change Wiser Radiator Thermostat Batteries

Watch our Smart Radiator Thermostat Battery Change Video Guide or follow the steps below:

1. Remove the Thermostat Head

  • Twist off or remove the thermostat head and remove the clip-in panel on the back to expose the battery compartment.

2. Remove Old Batteries

  • Take both AA batteries out safely.
  • Dispose of them safely according to local regulations.

3. Insert New Batteries

  • Insert two fresh AA alkaline batteries, ensuring polarity matches + / – symbols.
  • Do not use rechargeable batteries in Wiser’s smart thermostat devices.
  • Avoid twisting the cap to the +/- positions until it’s ready to recalibrate.

4. Fit the Thermostat Back onto the Valve

  • Ensure the chrome locking ring is snug and LED is facing forwards.

Remember – the Wiser Home app allows you to check battery status of your devices any time under Devices in the Settings menu.

What Happens After the Battery Change?

Once the new batteries are installed, the thermostat will begin its automatic calibration process, which ensures it sits correctly on the valve and controls temperature accurately.

If it doesn’t recalibrate automatically, watch our Recalibration How-to Video or simply twist the cap to the minus (-) position for a few seconds until the LED flashes blues and you hear the motor start the recalibration process – which takes only a few seconds.

During calibration:

  • The motor drives briefly to position itself.
  • LEDs may flash blue as part of the confirmation sequence.
  • The system checks the head, adapter and locking ring are secure.

It only takes a moment, and once complete, the thermostat should be ready to use again immediately.

How to Dispose of Old Batteries Safely

Remember to always dispose of batteries safely as even old batteries can present a fire risk. We always recommend old batteries are recycled at designated sites according to statutory regulations to protect the environment and conserve resources.

Most UK recycling centres and many supermarkets have dedicated battery collection points.
