What Is a Wireless Thermostat?
With home technology advancing so quickly, it’s no surprise that heating thermostats have also received an upgrade — no more manually adjusting temperature dials or being tied to a wall-mounted thermostat!
The wireless thermostat has revolutionised how we control home heating systems. But what is a wireless room thermostat, and what are their benefits?
What Is a Wireless Thermostat?
A wireless room thermostat is a digital device that allows homeowners to control the temperature of their heating system remotely. You may also hear it called a smart thermostat or Wi-Fi thermostat if it’s an internet-connected device.
Unlike traditional thermostats, which rely on physical wiring to connect to the heating system, wireless heating thermostats communicate with the system using radio frequency or Wi-Fi technology.
Some wireless room thermostats only connect to your boiler, but some, like the Wiser thermostat, also connect to other smart home devices to provide more features like multi-room heating control, meaning smart wireless room thermostats have the greatest potential to positively impact your heating control and reduce energy bills.
How Does a Smart Wireless Room Thermostat Work?
Smart wireless thermostats have two main components: a control unit and a receiver unit connected to the heating system. The control unit is typically a small, sleek device with a digital display and various control options. The receiver is a static device wired into the boiler that relays information from the other devices in the system to the boiler.
Your wireless heating thermostat connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network, enabling communication with smartphones or other devices like Alexa, but your Wiser system will still work even if your Wi-Fi goes down!
Using a dedicated mobile app, homeowners can remotely access and control their smart wireless thermostats from anywhere with an internet connection. This allows them to adjust temperatures, set schedules, and even monitor energy usage in real-time, no matter where they are.
Benefits of Smart Wireless Heating Controls
Convenient Remote Access
The biggest advantage of smart wireless heating thermostats is the ability to control temperature settings remotely. Whether at work, travelling, or simply lounging on the sofa, you can easily manage your home's climate using your smartphone or other connected devices without the need to manually adjust a conventional thermostat.
Easy-To-Use
A smart wireless room thermostat from Wiser keeps it simple by only displaying essential information, with straightforward buttons and icons to make adjusting your home’s temperature easy.
The intuitive interface and minimalist design also make it an excellent option for older people or those with disabilities.
Improved Energy Efficiency
Smart wireless thermostats empower homeowners to optimise their energy usage. By setting schedules and using features like geofencing (which adjusts the temperature based on the user's location), you can reduce energy waste and save on utility bills by as much as 30%*. No more letting the heating run all day when you forget to turn it off before going out!
Enhanced Comfort
With precise control over your heating system, a smart wireless heating thermostat allows you to maintain a comfortable environment in your home. You can ensure the temperature is toasty in the bedroom as you wake up while keeping the rest of the house nice and cool.
Simple Integration with Smart Home Systems
Smart wireless room thermostats often integrate seamlessly with other smart home devices, such as voice assistants. This integration opens up a wide range of home control and automation possibilities. A warm and cosy living room is only one Alexa command away!
When you switch to smart heating via a wireless room thermostat from Wiser, you can also transform your home’s automation using other Wiser products. Create personalised schedules and Moments that switch on your living room’s heating and ambient lighting or set the kettle to boil automatically at the time you’re due home with smart plugs and the Wiser Home app.
Future-Proofed Home Temperature Control
Smart wireless thermostats are a giant leap forward in home temperature control, offering convenience, energy efficiency, and enhanced comfort. Their remote access capabilities and intelligent features give homeowners greater control over their heating systems and are fast becoming the norm across our homes.
Installation
Due to complex wiring, traditional thermostats usually require professional installation, meaning that manual thermostats are not easily moved once installed.
A wireless room thermostat is generally simpler and faster to install. Because it’s not tied down by wires, it can be placed anywhere within your home.
Control
While conventional thermostats usually deliver reliable control, they require you to manually adjust your home’s heating from wherever the thermostat is installed, with no remote control capabilities.
A smart wireless heating thermostat can connect to your phone via an app, meaning you can control temperatures wherever you are. You can also use a wireless room thermostat to create automatic schedules that integrate with other smart home devices, helping your home life to run smoother.
Cost-Effectiveness
Generally, conventional thermostats can be less expensive upfront than wireless thermostats. However, the lack of connectivity and advanced features may lead to higher monthly bills due to less efficient energy consumption.
Meanwhile, wireless room thermostats have the potential to offset the initial investment over time by saving you up to 30%* on your annual energy bills.

If I Have Smart Radiator Thermostats, Do I Need a Wireless Room Thermostat?
While a system like Wiser doesn’t need a wireless thermostat to work, it is recommended that one or two wireless room thermostats be used in a system to provide more accurate temperature control.
Wireless heating thermostats are especially useful in open-plan spaces when using multiple smart radiator thermostats (or smart TRVs). The wireless room thermostat is a central control to maintain an accurate temperature in the zone that it’s placed in.
A wireless thermostat from Wiser also allows you to boost or override the smart radiator thermostats without the need to manually control each radiator, giving you more convenient control over your home’s heating.
Are Wiser Wireless Room Thermostats Secure?
Our advanced security features, which operate between Wiser in-home products like the wireless thermostat and app and cloud services, use the same encryption technology as banks to protect your data.
The Wiser Home app and software used in the wireless heating thermostats are continually updated to avoid potential cyber security threats.
