Seasonal Radiator Maintenance

When it comes to your heating system maintenance, prevention is better than cure. When you stay on top of regular maintenance, you’re much less likely to run into problems requiring radiator repair later on.

To maintain your system correctly, it is also essential to understand the basics of radiator maintenance and how to look after your system all year round.

1. Cleaning

While relatively simple, cleaning is one of the most important aspects of radiator maintenance. Dust and dirt accumulate on your radiators over time, which in turn, reduces the efficiency of the radiator. There are a few ways to clean your radiator, including:

  • Vacuuming: if you have a hoover with a brush attachment, you can use this to remove the dust and dirt on the top and bottom of the radiator.

  • Feather duster: The traditional duster on a long stick is an excellent way of cleaning your radiators. If you have a narrow duster that can fit in between the nooks and crannies of your radiator, even better!

  • Damp cloth: Using a damp microfibre cloth will efficiently remove dust and dirt from the surfaces of your radiator.

2. Checking For Leaks

Regularly checking for leaks is a crucial element of radiator maintenance that reduces the risk of radiator repair. If your radiator leaks, it can cause damage to your home and increase energy bills.

To check for leaks, simply inspect all parts of your radiator and see if there are any signs of water or moisture. If you identify a leak as part of your radiator maintenance routine, contact a professional to perform a radiator repair as soon as possible.

3. Check The Temperature

Radiator maintenance should always include checking the temperature of your system; if the temperature is too high or too low, it can cause damage to your home, but most of all, it can increase your energy bills.

Use a thermometer to measure the temperature in your radiator; if the temperature isn’t correct, contact a radiator repair professional to adjust it.

4. Check The Pressure

Another important part of radiator maintenance is checking the pressure. If the pressure in your central heating system is too high or low, the radiators may not work as effectively as they should; low pressure leads to overheating and damage, and high pressure increases the risk of leaks.

If your pressure is too low, you will need to contact a plumber to perform a radiator repair.

5. Check the Thermostat

Another essential part of radiator maintenance is to check your thermostat. All you need to do is to look for any signs of wear or damage; if your thermostat isn’t working correctly, it will affect your whole system.

6. Check The Valves

When conducting your radiator maintenance, ensure that checking the valves is on your list. If your radiator valves aren’t working correctly, it can cause damage and increase energy bills. To do this, inspect the valves for signs of wear or damage.

7. Upgrade To Smart Radiators

One of the best things you can do to simplify your radiator maintenance is to upgrade to a smart radiator system. By controlling your heating from your phone, you can ensure your smart radiators are working correctly, and you can pick up on issues before they lead to a hefty radiator repair bill.
