Wiser Explains: What Is A Heat Pump

As we’re all moving towards reducing carbon emissions in our day-to-day lives, heating our homes is a huge factor when it comes to sustainability. Also, with a ban on gas boilers coming into effect in 2030, now is the time to start thinking about green heating.

When it comes to heating our homes sustainably, heat pump integration is a great solution — but what is a heat pump?

We’ve broken down everything you need to know about heat pumps and how you can get started with heat pump integration in your smart home heating system

What is a heat pump?

Heat pumps are an excellent alternative to conventional heating, as they take thermal energy (also known as heat) from outside and deliver it to your central heating system. There are two types of heat pumps available:

  • Ground source heat pumps – sometimes referred to as ground-to-water heat pumps, these devices absorb thermal energy from the soil. The temperature within the soil stays consistent all year round, absorbing thermal energy from the sun each day.

  • Air source heat pumps – as the name suggests, air source heat pumps absorb the heat from the air by passing the air over an outside unit (known as an evaporator). Even in Winter, there’s plenty of thermal energy in the air due to the volume of air that passes through the evaporator.

Heat pumps absorb the heat already present in the environment; they do not require fuel to generate the heat, and they don’t release CO2. This makes them an excellent green heating solution for your home!

Should I use a heat pump?

Heat pumps are a fantastic sustainable heating solution for your green home, producing 3-4 times more heat than the electricity they consume. Not only will this help to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to helping the UK reach Net Zero by 2050, but you’ll also be saving on monthly energy bills — which is certainly welcome with the current energy price rises and the cost of living crisis!

We’ve teamed up with Panasonic to combine best-in-class heat pump technology with our market-leading smart heating system to give you complete control over heating your home sustainably. Bought a different heat pump? Don’t worry Wiser does integrate with other heat pump manufacturers
