A More Sustainable Britain: The PM’s 10-point Plan for a Greener Future

UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has set out a 10-point plan to revolutionise the sustainability of British industry, and is set to deploy £12 billion of government funding in areas including clean energy, nature, transport and innovative technologies; a plan being tipped as our Green Industrial Revolution.

The plan will create and support up to 250,000 British jobs in these sectors to support sustainability goals, which ultimately aim to eliminate the UK’s climate change contribution by 2050.

The most industrious areas of the country including the North East, Yorkshire, West Midlands, Scotland and Wales are at the very heart of this blueprint and will see significant investment in green jobs, and developing industries that will carry the UK into a more sustainable future.

The PM’s 10-point Green Industrial Revolution plan for Britain:

1. Quadruple Offshore Wind Energy by 2030

Producing enough wind-generated energy to power every UK home and supporting 60,000 jobs.

2. Develop Low-carbon Hydrogen Production

With an aim to develop the first entirely hydrogen-heated town by 2030.

3. Develop Clean Nuclear Energy

By moving forward with the next generation of smaller, more advanced nuclear reactors, supporting 10,000 jobs

4. Transition to Electric Vehicles

Accelerate the transition by backing UK car manufacture, rolling out more chargepoints, grants for electric vehicle buyers and development of more and better electric vehicle batteries.

5. Public Transport

Make cycling and public transport more attractive ways of getting around and invest in zero-emission public transport technology.

6. Greener Flight and Maritime

Supporting high-emission industries utilising research into zero-emission planes (‘Jet zero’) and ships.

7. More Efficient Homes and Buildings

Help our homes and public buildings become greener, warmer and more efficient by installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 and creating 50,000 jobs by 2030.

8. Increase Active Removal of Greenhouse Gases

Becoming a world leader in technology that could capture and remove 10MT of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2030.

9. Restore Natural Environments and Increase Biodiversity

Protect and restore our natural environments by planting 30,000 hectares of trees per year, creating and sustaining thousands more jobs.

10. Green Budget Management

Develop cutting-edge technology to help City of London manage the finances needed to reach these new sustainable ambitions, and become a ‘global centre of green finance’.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

"Although this year has taken a very different path to the one we expected, I haven’t lost sight of our ambitious plans to level up across the country. My Ten Point Plan will create, support and protect hundreds of thousands of green jobs, whilst making strides towards net zero by 2050.

"Our Green Industrial Revolution will be powered by the wind turbines of Scotland and the North East, propelled by the electric vehicles made in the Midlands and advanced by the latest technologies developed in Wales, so we can look ahead to a more prosperous, greener future."

This follows ambitious plans to make the UK the world leader in clean wind energy, and plans for greater protections for England’s iconic landscapes and the creation of new national parks, as set out by the Prime Minister over the last few weeks.
