Green Homes Grant Scheme: Can You Get Smart Heating Controls?

The government's Green Homes Grant Scheme officially began in November 2020. Of select home improvements that the program offers, multi-zone smart heating controls are included. But do you know if you can qualify for a smart heating upgrade?

The Green Homes Grant: Key Details

What is it?

The government-run scheme aims to help pay for energy-efficient home improvements to homeowners in England. It is projected to cover two thirds of upgrade costs for over 600,000 homes.

What does it cover?

It will cover a selection of what the government calls ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ improvements, providing a maximum grant value of either £5,000 or £10,000. Primary improvements include enhancements such as home insulation, heat pumps and biomass boilers. Secondary improvements include double-glazed windows, energy-efficient doors and heating controls, like smart thermostats and smart TRVs.

Do You qualify For Smart Heating Controls?

To qualify, you need to be a homeowner in England, which includes owner-occupiers, social and private landlords, and park homeowners. The only homeowner exceptions are new-build property owners.

If you qualify, you can apply for vouchers to cover up to two thirds of the specified home improvement costs, up to a total value of £5,000. Some homeowners may qualify for up to £10,000 of funding if they’re receiving support from one of several other support schemes mentioned by the government. How long does the scheme last?

Applications for grants started back in September last year, and the scheme launched a couple of months later. You have until the end of March 2022 to apply for the home improvement vouchers, and these are valid for either three months or until the program’s end date (extensions are also available).
