Monday 22nd March 2021 marks the 29th World Water Day designated by the UN. So, we wanted to raise awareness of water sustainability issues, and discuss ways we can all save water at home. Not only could this help make your home more sustainable on World Water Day, but it could also allow you to Save on Your Energy Bills!
What is World Water Day?
This annual event held every 22nd of March, is an international platform to advocate for water sustainability. It’s widely celebrated with everything from environmental lobbying and campaigns, to educational and entertainment activities, all designed to engage the public.
Each year, there is a theme that focuses either on clean water, sanitation, or other relevant topics. For example, because of the emerging COVID-19 situation this time last year, 2020’s theme concerned hand washing and hygiene. For 2021, the theme is the value of water and its everyday importance in our lives, with the UN organisers saying:
“By recording - and celebrating - all the different ways water benefits our lives, we can value water properly and safeguard it effectively for everyone.”
What can you do at home?
Whilst the day’s international focus may make its objectives sound large-scale, there are small but effective measures that you can try at home. With this year’s theme being water in our daily lives, reducing local water use is perhaps the best way of showing support in 2021. Try these tips this year:
- Check out the World Water Day Toolkit
- Reduce tap use and shower lengths
- Only boil the water you need
- Use washing machines and dishwashers only when at full capacity
- Reduce meat intake and switch to more seasonal fruit and vegetables
- Utilise Smart Boiler Control Features
- Educate others on what you’ve learned
How Wiser (and Conventional Boilers) can help you
If you have a conventional boiler with a separate hot water tank, you can set activation times for your hot water as well as your Smart Heating. Whilst the latter can be great for energy efficiency, taking advantage of your conventional boiler’s off/on hot water settings could also save you money this World Water Day. The best part is that you can create and edit schedules via Our Heating App, so you can save water and energy remotely with minimal effort!
