Does Underfloor Heating Need a Remote Floor Sensor?
If you want the most energy-efficient underfloor heating system possible, then we recommend fitting a remote floor sensor during installation. This is the case regardless of whether you opt for an Electric or Water-Based System. But will your UFH work without one?
In short, yes – underfloor heating will work without a remote floor sensor as typically it can operate with just an air sensor. But a floor sensor is important when it comes to achieving a More Energy-Efficient system, as well as greater comfort and temperature control. Additionally, electric UFH panels may require a remote floor sensor for electrical compliance or to fulfil a product warranty.
What is a Remote Floor Sensor?
Underfloor heating is controlled via a Smart Room Thermostat, but it’s the remote floor sensor that makes that possible. They work by identifying the temperature of a given room through the heat emanating from the floor. Other sensors can do a similar job using the room temperature in the air, but floor devices are more common as they can prevent the UFH system from overheating, preventing long-term damage.
Underfloor Heating without a floor sensor
If you forgot to add a remote floor sensor to your UFH system, then some solutions include:
Use Smart Modes
As precise temperature control won’t be possible without a sensor, you could maintain a steady heat level using one of Wiser’s Smart Modes. These are designed to save energy and will help make your underfloor heating more efficient.
Install a sensor after the UFH system
Just because your underfloor heating is already in place doesn’t mean that you can’t add a remote sensor afterwards. Check with Your Local Installer to see what the options are for your home, as there should be options available for both wet and dry UFH systems.
