What Smart Home Technology Will We See In The Future?
Our survey shows one of the most popular aspirational tech would like fingerprint-scanning door locks, plus blinds or curtains which opened based on the time of day, and a heating system that sends you reports on how energy efficient you're being.
It's not clear when tech like fingerpirnt-scanning doors will be available will be available, but the majority of people surveyed would like to see this within the next 5 years. Our participants also expect that heating systems which can recognise body temperature will be available within the next 7 years, and TVs that can identify who's watching and choose a suitable program in around 6 years! (We hope so too).
Why and When To Invest In Smart Home Tech?
Nearly half of those surveyed say it's important to them to keep up to date with latest smart tech, whilst 39% believe investing in smart tech will be vital to future-proofing our homes.
Sustainable tech and reducing our carbon footprint are also important considerations; a whopping 89% stated that before purchasing any smart home technology they will consider the sustainability features and qualities.
According to our survey, there were 3 main driving forces for investing in smart home tech:
Saving money
Convenience
Safety and security
Due to our experience in the smart heating sector, it didn’t come as a surprise that 49% of people listed saving money as the driving force behind them investing in smart tech.
How Smart Tech Benefits Our Day-to-day Life
Half of our participants stated that due to working from home in the last 6 months, they've thought more about how to improve their home. By using smart home technology such as speakers, thermostats, plug etc:
47% of people feel energy usage can improve
46% of people feel home comfort can improve
33% of people feel it will help them personalise their home
When looking at specific areas to improve whilst working from home, our survey showed that:
27% would like better lighting
47% would like a dedicated workspace such as a home office
29% would like room-to-room heating
This year has seen the life of workers completely change, and many have seen electricity and heating bills spike due to more time at home. As the trend of working from home is likely to continue, here at Wiser we're committed to continuously developing our products and services to make the lives of homeowners easier, better and greener.
How Much Are Households Spending On Smart Home Technology?
In the last 5 years, typical spend on smart home technology for households averages £1,345. With the continuous evolution of smart home devices that'll become available, this is expected to jump to around £1,625 in the next 5 years.
Smart Home Devices Already In Our Homes
